It's a radical assault (poem/lyrics)

A song lyric from 1982 originally titled We are so righteous focused on the Moral Majority

It’s a radical assault.

We're the Moral Majority,
Our god gave us authority.
We denounce civil rights.
Justice for us,
We are the right wing, closed society.

We are so righteous.
We are so religious.
We are the christian fundamentalists.
We are, we are, we are.

What is it all about?
Where is the reason?
Where is the rhyme?

Are we the victims of virtue, morale.
The eye of the needle is narrow.
Can't look beyond,
destiny, destiny.

We are many hitlers.
We are the ku klux klan.
We want your life,
You are only a man.

Who's to say what's right or wrong,
Words are interpreted.
Question.
Sought and not found.

What have you done?

We have preached justice.
We are so righteous.
We are so religious.

It's a radical assault.
It's a radical assault.

We denounce civil rights.
Justice for us.
We are the right wing closed society.

What have we done?

This set of song lyrics or what maybe qualifies as a poem was written around 1982 during the Reagan era. The Moral Majority was co-founded in 1979 by Jerry Falwell an American Baptist pastor, televangelist, and conservative activist from south of the Mason-Dixon Line following his own tour of the country to raise money. As an activist with the power of a television show, he was frequently in the press at the time.

The Moral Majority decried the rights of women through its opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment and portrayed issues such as abortion, divorce, feminism, gay and lesbian rights, and the Equal Rights Amendment as attacks on the traditional concept and values of American families. In addition, they were opposed to Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT).

Disbanded in the late 80s, notably at a convention in Las Vegas (the humor is not lost on me), the Moral Majority under the guise of traditional family values consolidated a number of previously disparate issues creating a social platform embraced by many conservative republicans. Scroll down further for their social agenda.

The separation between the Church and State is imperative for true freedom of religion to exist. Personally I’ve always had a problem with anyone who wanted to convince someone that they should convert to any faith. I’m a proponent of live and let live and try to have compassion for others and yourself too. We all have a shadow, that doesn’t mean you need to project it on others to redeem yourself.
